As airlines and other travel companies are implementing biometric technology to expedite transit time, customers are taking advantage of these programs to move swiftly through the airport. As we’ve previously noted, CLEAR is one of the best ways to shorten your time spent in an airline terminal. Now, travel suppliers are expanding biometric travel solutions even further.
Delta Airlines is leading the way with the launch of a fully-integrated biometric terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Delta has shown a commitment to implementing emerging technologies and was named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Worldwide in 2018. In addition, the airline owns a 5% stake in CLEAR. Delta is also testing a self-service luggage kiosk that will scan your face and verify your passport so you can check your own bag.
Their “curb-to-gate” facial recognition system for international travelers in Atlanta's airport started in December, and will be available in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport this year. Although customers like the convenience of biometric shortcuts, a 2018 Brookings poll showed that 44% of respondents viewed such systems unfavorably, as opposed to 27% who thought favorably of them.
Travelers who have a CLEAR account can now use it at certain Hertz locations to get on the road faster. This partnership is the first use of biometrics by a major car rental company. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® members may now speed through the rental process using their CLEAR account. CLEAR members must link their account to their Gold Plus Rewards account. Travelers can scan their fingerprints or use facial recognition in place of physical IDs to checkout cars. With the CLEAR option, Hertz Fast Lane promises to get renters through the exit gate in 30 seconds or less.
If you’re already a CLEAR member, you simply link the two accounts. Otherwise, enroll at any CLEAR pod at the airport. Once you link your CLEAR account with your Gold Plus Rewards account, you’ll be able to use it at one of the following locations:
- Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL)
- Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)
- Washington Dulles International (IAD)
Hertz will introduce Hertz Fast Lane powered by CLEAR at over 40 new locations throughout 2019 including Washington National Airport (DCA) and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC).
